Rosewood Mayakoba- Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Resort at Night

Resort at Night

Rosewood Mayakoba is truly one of our favorite tropical destinations. If you are looking for an incredible, zero stress, top notch beach vacation with the family, then this this just might be your holy grail. At first we balked at the idea of going to Mexico with the children, fearing the water and being afraid that they would get sick, but rest assured the water at the Rosewood Mayakoba is filtered and so safe, that although not recommended, you can even drink from the pool (as our seven year-old son did). However, after hearing fabulous reviews and seeing the pictures of the mile-long turquoise Mexican Caribbean beach, we couldn’t pack our flip flops fast enough!

Rosewood Mayakoba is a good mix of family, couples and young honeymooners. Depending on the time of year that you are traveling, however during winter breaks and Christmas you can expect to see the most amount of kids. In fact, the resort has the “Rose Buds” program which is designed specifically to ensure that your kids will have everything they need and more. By more we mean, they even brought in a magician just to put on our show for our two kids!

Getting to the Rosewood Mayakoba

The resort is located just 30 minutes south of the airport in Cancun, where depending on where you are originating from, you may very well luck out with a direct flight. Departing from the New York area, we had several flight times and carriers to choose from .

TIP: When booking, ask the hotel or your travel consultant to arrange ahead for airport transportation. Upon arrival we were met just outside the exit by a hotel ambassador and immediately handed refreshing crisp chilled towels and bottled water before being whisked away in a Cadillac Escalade. If you forget to prearrange transportation, there is no shortage of very willing cab drivers at the airport.

The Grounds

The resort is set on 1600 acres of beach, jungle and and garden, all of which are meticulously groomed and breathtakingly beautiful. As expansive as the grounds are, getting around is easy and fun… yes that’s right… fun! Bikes are available during your stay, for adults only though. The best way to navigate the resort with children is by hailing one of the several passing golf carts. Super friendly staff members are constantly circulating offering to pick you and your family up and will take you wherever you would like to go on the property.

What our kids loved about getting around at the resort: Being chauffeured around in golf carts and being taken to our room by boat.

DINING
2

The Rosewood Maykoba resort has three remarkable restaurants all welcoming to families,  the most casual being Punta Bontia located right at the beach pool. Your personal butler will be able to help you make dinner reservations at any one of the resort’s fabulous restaurants:

Agave Azul- where fine sushi and an impressive selection on tequila await. The vibe is chic yet comfortable, and kids are welcome.  Guests can dine inside our out, and will enjoy beautiful resort and lagoon views.

Casa del Lago- located just above the main pool area, this restaurant is open breakfast, lunch and dinner and the vibe is resort elegant. Guests will enjoy delicious Italian inspired cuisine with hints of Mexican influence.

Casa Del Lago Bar-  here you will find frothy cocktails, wonderful  tapas a comfortable place to watch “the game”

La Cava- provides an intimate setting , perfect for small groups or a romantic dinner  away from the kids with an impressive wine selection.

What our kids loved about dining at the resort:

  • Taco Night and the festive entertainment offered by an authentic Mexican Mariachi band
  • Fruit Loops at the elaborate breakfast buffet, and fresh fruit smoothies made to their exact liking
  • Tasty kids menus, and virgin pina coladas
  • Pool and beach side wait service
  • Extremely Attentive Staff

the rooms

The resort has 128 beautifully designed suites that would make the folks at Architectural Digest swoon, ranging from studio to presidential suites all with sweeping views of either the Mexican Caribbean or the tropical lagoon.

We had our initial reservations about going to a beach resort and not having a beach-front room, but there was a large enough difference in the cost to sway us into taking a suite on the lagoon and the lagoon did not disappoint! The rooms on the lagoon are surrounded by a jungle of mangrove trees which abound with wildlife including iguanas, turtles, coati, pelicans, crocodiles and various other species. Some of the suites are more camouflaged from the neighbors than others, so if privacy is your thing you may want to request accordingly.

(One pool is located at the Spa and is not open to children) Both family-friendly pools pools have full service waitstaff and the option for a cabana. The beach pool, is where the kids club is conveniently located, and also has a shallow end which is great for little ones.

Forgot water boys? Sunscreen? There is also a small sundry shop at the beach pool, in additional to the larger on at the lobby, where pool toys, sunscreen in high SPFs can be purchased. They also have a small supply of pool toys that can be borrowed.

What our kids loved about the pool:

  • Hot Tubs
  • Free poolside amenities – lots of little fun surprises by the staff throughout the day
  • Frozen ice cart (even we the parents enjoyed this refreshing poolside treat)

the Beach

At the beach, you will find an ample supply of beach chairs and umbrellas, as well as the same wait service as the pool. In fact the beach is just a few steps off the pool deck. This is the only swimming location on the resort with a lifeguard on duty. Small sunfish sailboats, boogie boards and paddles boards are available to us.

Rosebud Kid’s Club

mexico-nov-13-014-copy-2

Please allow me to premise this by saying this is the first hotel kids’ club that our children ever enjoyed. This air conditioned space is stocked with board games, video games, and staffed with extremely competent and enthusiastic caregivers. The kids would stop by the pool to swim with us or have a bite to eat, but they were usually eager to check in on the next craft project happening at the Kids’ Club. The Kids’ Club is super conveniently located at the beach pool, where we were easily able to check-in with each other.

What our kids loved most about the Kids’ Club:

  • Ecology tour – A one-hour boat around around the resort, parents invited but not needed. Kids go with an Kid’s Club Staff member and resort ecologist, armed with cameras (on loan to them from the Kids’ Club) to look at learn about the native flora and fauna. My husband and I enjoyed the tour as much as the kids and we all learned a ton!
  • Private Magic Show
  • The amazingly fun and fab staff!
  • Pizza making class
  • Knowing we were close by at the pool

Additional Babysitting Services:

The Rosewood Mayakoba does offer babysitting services, with reservations made in 24 hours in advance.

Billiards & Board Games:

There is a billiard room on site with which also has a few family board games. The beach pool waiter even fetched us a chess board from the room so that my son and husband could have a game at the pool.

Spelunking!

Need a break from the sun, take the family and head into the underground cave right on the resort property. Upon arriving to the cave we were met by a nature guide, who led down into the cave and explained to us about the history all of the various bat species that we were able to see. A bit hesitant at first, but so happy our children we able to have this experience. They walked away thinking it was pretty cool.

 the Spa

rosewood-mayakoba-spa-sense

While the kids are off and exploring, sneak away to the spa, as you will not be disappointed. The spa, Sense, is a retreat within a retreat. Just when you thought you couldn’t be anymore relaxed, have a therapeutic spa treatment or two and you will be taken to a whole new level of zen. The 17,000 sq ft spa, is located on its own magical little island tucked inside the resort. It boasts its own adult-only pool , 12 treatment rooms and a relaxation deck. Be sure to ask your butler to make you an appointment or two.
